Shell Petroleum Development Company Of Nigeria Limited Sponsored Music Talent Competition

Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Limited (SPDC) supported a special Music Talent Competition for youths in its operational areas as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

It started in 2008 when Swamp 1 Operational team in the Eastern Division sponsored the event for youths in 9 Local Government Areas (LGA) hosting its facilities namely Ikot Abassi, Eastern Obolo, Opobo/Nkoro, Andoni, Bonny, Okrika/ Ogu/Bolo, Degema, Asaritoru and Akukutoru.

These same LGAs took part in the 2009 version.

In 2010 the Eastern Swamp Asset teams (Swamp 1 and Swamp 2) involving 11 LGAs namely namely Ikot Abassi and Eastern Obolo in Akwa Ibom State; Opobo/Nkoro, Andoni, Bonny, Okrika/ Ogu/Bolo, Degema, Asaritoru and Akukutoru in Rivers State Nembe and Brass in Bayelsa State took part.

Nestoil PLC (an indigenous oil servicing company) co-sponsored the event in 2010 when they provided Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N400,000) prize money for the third placed winner.

Nestoil also co-sponsored the event in 2012.

The event has helped in spurring talented youths towards developing the natural gifts and putting them on the path towards self reliance and self worth. The continuation of this effort will obviously bring about the emergence of new music mega stars from the Niger Delta.

A number of the people who had competed in the event had released their singles/albums, which play on radio and Television stations.

This event is different from the numerous Music competitions in that only songs composed by the contestants are use in the contest to boost creativity and catalyzing the emergence of new music super starts.
